Pedego Controller & Display Settings: A User’s Guide

Your Pedego display is the command center for how your motor behaves. It shows speed, battery, and assist level, but it also holds a hidden settings menu that controls wheel size calibration, speed limits, and assist behavior. This guide walks through the P-settings menu, PAS level tuning, display unit changes, and error code readouts, with model-specific notes where they matter.


What Your Display Actually Controls

Pedego bikes ship with several display types depending on model and year. The most common are LCD units with a five-button control pad (up, down, mode/power, and sometimes a walk button). Older models may use simpler LED displays, while newer Interceptor and Boomerang models use full-color LCDs.

The display shows:

  • Current speed (mph or km/h)
  • Battery charge level (bars or percentage)
  • Assist level (PAS 0–5, sometimes 0–9)
  • Trip odometer and total odometer
  • Error codes when something needs attention

The mechanism that matters: The display doesn’t just show data—it sends signals to the controller that govern how much current the motor receives at each pedal-assist level. Changing P-settings alters that communication. That’s why a single parameter change can noticeably affect acceleration, top speed, and range.


Entering and Navigating P-Settings

P-settings (parameter settings) are the hidden menu on most Pedego displays. They let you adjust wheel size, speed limit, and assist behavior.

To enter P-settings:

1. Turn the bike off.

2. Press and hold both the up and down arrows simultaneously.

3. While holding, press the power button to turn the bike on.

4. Release all buttons when the display shows “P01” or a similar parameter code.

To navigate:

  • Use up/down to scroll through parameters (P01, P02, etc.)
  • Use mode to select a parameter and change its value
  • Use up/down to adjust the value
  • Press mode again to confirm
  • Hold mode to exit, or turn the bike off and on

If the display doesn’t respond: Check your owner’s manual. Pedego has used at least three different display protocols over the years, and the entry method can vary slightly. Some older displays require holding mode + up instead of up + down.


Key P-Settings and What They Do

Not every Pedego display has every parameter, but these are the ones you’re most likely to encounter and actually want to change.

P01: Backlight Brightness

  • Range: 1–5 (sometimes 1–3)
  • Higher values draw slightly more power from the display, but the impact on overall range is minimal.
  • Set it to the lowest value you can comfortably read in daylight to reduce glare at night.

P02: Unit Selection (Miles vs. Kilometers)

  • 0 = miles, 1 = kilometers
  • If you bought a used Pedego from a previous owner who rode metric, this is the first setting to check. Your speedometer will read about 60% high if the units are wrong.

P03: Voltage Setting

  • Should match your battery (e.g., 36V, 48V, 52V)
  • Do not change this unless you know your battery voltage. Setting it wrong can cause inaccurate battery readings and, in some cases, prevent the bike from powering on. If you’re unsure, check the label on your battery pack or charger.

P05: Wheel Size

  • Entered in inches (e.g., 26, 27.5, 20)
  • This directly affects speed accuracy. A wrong wheel size means your speedometer reads fast or slow, which also affects odometer readings and, on some models, the speed limiter.

Why this matters: If you swap tires for a different size (e.g., going from 26″ to 27.5″ on a Boomerang), your speed reading will be off by roughly 5%. That’s not just annoying—it can make you think you’re riding slower than you are, which affects how you judge traffic and your own effort.

P06: Speed Limit (Max Speed)

  • Range varies by model, typically 15–28 mph (25–45 km/h)
  • This is the electronic cutoff for motor assist. Pedego ships bikes with a default limit that varies by model and local regulations.
  • Raising this does not make the motor more powerful—it just allows assist to continue at higher speeds.

Trade-off: A higher speed limit means more range consumption at speed. The motor draws disproportionately more power above 20 mph due to aerodynamic drag, so raising the limit from 20 to 25 mph can cut range by 15–20% on the same ride.

P08: Throttle Response (if equipped)

  • Some displays let you adjust throttle sensitivity or enable/disable the throttle
  • Lower values give a gentler start; higher values give more immediate response
  • If you’re new to e-bikes, start low and work up

P09: Assist Level Behavior

  • Some controllers let you set whether PAS levels ramp up gradually or jump immediately
  • A “0” value often means each level is a fixed power output; a “1” may enable a smoother curve

Adjusting PAS Levels for Your Riding Style

Pedego’s pedal-assist system (PAS) uses a cadence sensor—it detects when you’re pedaling and applies motor power accordingly. Unlike torque-sensor bikes, which measure how hard you push, a cadence sensor responds to pedaling motion alone.

What the levels mean:

  • PAS 0: No motor assist. You’re riding a heavy e-bike under your own power.
  • PAS 1–2: Light assist. Good for extending range, flat terrain, or when you want a workout.
  • PAS 3–4: Moderate assist. The sweet spot for most commuting and errands.
  • PAS 5: Maximum assist. Use for hills, headwinds, or when you’re carrying cargo.

Practical tuning tips:

  • If you’re commuting on flat ground, PAS 2 or 3 typically delivers the best balance of speed and range.
  • On hills, shift to a lower gear before you need it. The cadence sensor responds to pedaling motion, so if you’re grinding in a high gear, the motor may not engage smoothly.
  • If you find PAS 1 too weak and PAS 2 too strong, check whether your display supports a 9-level assist mode. Some Pedego controllers can be switched between 5-level and 9-level assist in the P-settings, giving you finer control.

The mechanism: Each PAS level corresponds to a specific current limit sent to the motor controller. A higher level means more current, which means more torque from the motor—but also more battery draw. The relationship isn’t linear; the jump from PAS 4 to PAS 5 is often larger than the jump from PAS 1 to PAS 2.


Display Units and Odometer Settings

Beyond the P-settings, your display has everyday functions worth knowing:

  • Trip odometer: Resets manually. Use it to track per-ride distance or to verify your range against battery capacity.
  • Total odometer: Permanent and used for maintenance intervals (chain, brake pads, tire wear).
  • Average speed: Some displays track this per trip. It’s a useful metric for estimating commute times.
  • Max speed: Shows the highest speed reached on the current trip. Reset it along with the trip odometer.

Unit conversion note: If you switch from miles to kilometers, the odometer values do not convert retroactively—the display just changes how new distance is recorded. Your total odometer will show a different number, but it represents the same physical distance.


Error Codes and What They Mean

Pedego displays show error codes when the controller detects a fault. Codes vary by display generation, but these are the most common:

What to do when an error appears:

1. Turn the bike off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.

2. If the code returns, check the obvious connections first—brake levers, throttle, and the display cable where it plugs into the controller.

3. If the code persists and it’s not a simple connector issue, this is a shop visit. Do not attempt to bypass error codes; the controller is protecting the motor and battery from damage.

The mechanism: Error codes are the controller’s way of saying “I detected a condition that could damage components.” For example, a motor phase error means the controller can’t properly drive the motor windings—continuing to ride could overheat and permanently damage the motor.

Stop and escalate when: You’ve checked all visible connectors, the error code returns immediately after a power cycle, and the code is not E06 (low battery). At that point, continuing to ride risks permanent damage to the motor or controller. Contact a Pedego dealer or authorized service center—warranty coverage typically requires professional diagnosis anyway, and attempting to bypass a fault code can void it.


Model-Specific Notes

Pedego’s lineup uses different controllers and displays, and not all settings are available on all models.

Pedego Interceptor (Class 2)

  • The Interceptor’s display typically includes throttle enable/disable in the P-settings.
  • The speed limiter is set to 20 mph (Class 2 standard). Raising it may make the bike non-compliant with Class 2 rules in your area—check local regulations before adjusting.

Pedego Boomerang (Step-Thru)

  • Uses a smaller display with fewer P-settings. Wheel size and units are the main adjustable parameters.
  • The Boomerang’s PAS levels are tuned for a more relaxed, upright riding position—don’t expect the same aggressive acceleration as the Interceptor.

Pedego Trail Tracker (Fat Tire)

  • The Trail Tracker’s display includes a wheel size setting that must match its 26″ x 4″ tires.
  • If you swap to a different tire width, the diameter changes slightly, which affects speed accuracy. Re-check P05 after any tire change.

Pedego Stretch (Cargo)

  • The Stretch has a higher payload capacity, and its PAS levels are tuned to handle cargo loads.
  • If you regularly ride loaded, consider setting a lower max speed to preserve range—the extra weight already increases motor draw significantly.

Resetting to Factory Defaults

If you’ve changed settings and something feels wrong, most Pedego displays allow a factory reset:

1. Enter P-settings (hold up + down, then power on).

2. Scroll to the reset parameter (often labeled “RST” or “FAC”).

3. Confirm the reset.

4. Turn the bike off and on.

After reset: You’ll need to re-enter your wheel size and units. The bike will default to kilometers and a generic wheel size, which will make your speed read inaccurately until you correct it.


A Note on Aftermarket Displays

If your Pedego’s display fails, you might be tempted to swap in a universal replacement. However, Pedego uses proprietary communication protocols on many models, and a universal display may not read your battery level or allow PAS adjustment correctly.

If it doesn’t, the display will power on but won’t communicate with the controller—leaving you with a speedometer that doesn’t control anything. Working Through Settings Safely

The P-settings menu on your Pedego is worth exploring, but change one thing at a time and test it before moving to the next. A wrong wheel size or voltage setting can produce confusing symptoms that look like hardware failures when the bike is actually fine.

Start with the basics: confirm your units, verify your wheel size, and set your speed limit to match your local rules. From there, adjust PAS levels to match how you ride.
