Engwe Controller & Display Settings: A User’s Guide
Your Engwe e-bike’s display isn’t just a speedometer—it’s the control panel for the entire motor system. The P-settings menu hidden inside it governs top speed, pedal-assist response, throttle sensitivity, and even how your speedometer calculates speed. You don’t need a dealer or a special tool to adjust these. You just need to know which buttons to hold and what each parameter actually changes.
This guide covers the settings that matter, how to change them safely, and what to do when an error code appears.
What You Need Before Changing Settings
- Your Engwe display powered on
- The bike’s manual (or this guide) for button references
- A clear understanding of your bike’s voltage class (36V, 48V, or 52V) and wheel size
The most common Engwe displays use a five-button layout: Power, Mode, Up (+), Down (−), and sometimes a separate Walk button. Newer models like the L20 2.0 use a side-mounted control pad, but the menu structure is essentially the same.
Entering the P-Settings Menu
The P-menu is a hidden configuration layer. Here’s how to access it on most Engwe models:
1. Turn on the display.
2. Press and hold both Up (+) and Down (−) simultaneously for 3–5 seconds.
3. The screen will switch to a parameter display (P01, P02, etc.).
4. Use Up/Down to scroll through parameters.
5. Press Mode to select a parameter, then Up/Down to change its value.
6. Press Mode again to confirm, or hold Mode to exit.
If the combo doesn’t work: Try Power + Up held for 5 seconds, or Power + Mode on older models. Some displays require you to hold the buttons while the bike is off, then power on while still holding.
Key P-Settings and What They Do
Not every parameter appears on every Engwe display, but these are the ones you’ll actually use. Values in parentheses are typical defaults.

P02: Switching to MPH
If your display shows km/h but you think in miles, set P02 to 1. This changes the speed readout and odometer to mph. It does not change the speed limit value—that’s P07.
P06: Wheel Size and Speed Accuracy
Your speedometer calculates speed from wheel rotations. If the wheel size is wrong, your speed reading will be off by the same percentage. For the L20 2.0’s 20″×3.0″ fat tires, set P06 to 20. If you’ve swapped to different tire sizes, adjust accordingly. A 26″ tire on a 20″ setting will read about 23% too slow—meaning you’re actually going faster than the display shows.
P07: Speed Limit and Legal Class
This is the ceiling for pedal-assist speed. On most Engwe models, the default is set to comply with local e-bike class laws (typically 20 mph for Class 2, 28 mph for Class 3). Raising it beyond legal limits may make the bike non-compliant where you ride. The L20 2.0’s 750W motor (1125W peak) can reach 28 mph in PAS mode when the limit is raised, but check your local regulations before doing so.
P10 and P11: Tuning Pedal Assist Feel
These two work together. P10 controls how quickly the motor responds to pedal input—lower values mean you pedal more before the motor kicks in, which feels more natural for slow-speed maneuvering. P11 controls how strong the motor pulls once engaged. If your PAS feels jerky, lower P10. If it feels weak, raise P11. A good starting point for city commuting is P10 at 5–8 and P11 at 3–4.
Adjusting PAS Levels While Riding
You don’t need the P-menu for day-to-day assist changes. The Up/Down buttons cycle through PAS levels (typically 0–5) in real time.
- PAS 0: No motor assist—ride like a regular bike
- PAS 1–2: Light assist, good for flat terrain and extending range
- PAS 3–4: Moderate assist, balanced for commuting
- PAS 5: Maximum assist, best for hills or headwinds
The L20 2.0’s 75Nm torque motor pulls hardest at PAS 5, which is useful for steep climbs but drains the 52V 13Ah battery faster. If you’re chasing the 68-mile max range, stay in PAS 1–2 and pedal consistently.
Reading Error Codes
When something goes wrong, the display shows an error code instead of your speed. Here are the most common ones on Engwe bikes:

First troubleshooting step: Power off the bike, disconnect the battery, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect. If the code persists, check the corresponding connector. Most Engwe wiring uses waterproof plugs—make sure they’re fully seated and free of corrosion.
Model-Specific Notes
L20 2.0
The L20 2.0 uses a 52V system with a 750W rear hub motor (1125W peak). Its display supports the full P-menu described above. For the 28 mph top speed, you’ll need to raise P07 to the maximum and ride in PAS 5. The 52V battery means the voltage class (P03) must stay at 52—changing this can damage the controller.
Engine Pro and Engine X
These models use a similar display but with a slightly different P-menu layout. The throttle voltage setting (P08) is more sensitive on these bikes—if your throttle feels twitchy at low speeds, raise the value to 1.2–1.5V for smoother starts.
Older Models (EP-2 Pro, M1)
Earlier Engwe bikes may use a simpler display with fewer P-settings. You’ll typically have access to P01–P07 only. If your display doesn’t respond to the button combo above, try Power + Mode held for 5 seconds instead.
Factory Reset and Verification
If you’ve changed settings and the bike behaves oddly, you can reset the controller to factory defaults. On most Engwe displays:
1. Enter the P-menu.
2. Scroll to the last parameter (often P99 or P100).
3. Set it to 1 and confirm.
The display will restart, and all settings return to factory values.
To verify the reset worked: Power on the bike and check that the speed readout matches your expected units (mph or km/h). Then take a short test ride—the motor should engage smoothly at your default PAS level, and the speedometer should read a plausible speed for your pedaling effort. If the display shows a normal speed and no error codes, the reset was successful.
When to Leave It Alone
The controller settings that affect motor timing (P09) and current limits (P12) are best left at factory values unless you know exactly what you’re doing. Changing the motor phase angle incorrectly can make the motor run rough or not at all. Lowering the current limit reduces torque and acceleration, which might feel safer but also makes the bike less capable on hills.
If you’re adjusting settings for range or comfort, stick to P02, P06, P07, P10, and P11. Those are safe, reversible, and have immediate, noticeable effects on the ride. For anything else, consult Engwe’s support documentation or a qualified e-bike technician.
The P-menu is powerful, but it’s also forgiving—most settings are reversible, and a factory reset clears any mistakes. Start with the safe adjustments, test each change on a short ride, and keep a record of what you changed so you can revert if something feels off.
