The trade-off is that a belt requires an internally geared hub (IGH) like a Shimano Nexus or Rohloff Speedhub. These hubs offer fewer gear ratios than a derailleur system — typically 3, 5, 7, 8, or 14 speeds. That’s fine for flat commutes, but you’ll feel the gap on steep, sustained climbs. If your daily route includes any grade over 8%, you’ll likely spin out or struggle to get moving from a stop.

You cannot run a belt with a traditional derailleur. The belt is continuous and requires a split in the frame or a removable dropout to install, plus a rear hub that has a belt-compatible sprocket. That hub is almost always an IGH. If your preferred e-bike doesn’t come with a belt-ready frame and hub, retrofitting is usually not cost-effective — expect to spend $400–$700 on parts and labor.
How to verify compatibility on your bike: Look at the rear triangle of the frame. If there’s a split in the seatstay or a removable dropout plate, the frame can accept a belt.
