Troxus Controller & Display Settings: A User’s Guide
Your Troxus display and controller handle not only speed readouts—they control pedal assist response, throttle behavior, speed limits, and error reporting. The factory manual usually covers the basics but skips the settings that actually change how the bike rides. This guide walks through the P-settings menu, display units, PAS levels, and error codes, with model-specific notes for common Troxus setups.
Before You Change Anything: What You Need and What to Record
Grab the owner’s manual for your specific Troxus model, a phone to take photos, and a few minutes without distractions. Before you enter the settings menu, do two things:
1. Write down or photograph your current settings. Most displays let you scroll through the P-menu without saving changes, so you can read the factory defaults and revert if something goes wrong. If you skip this and change the wrong value, you may not remember the original.
2. Check your battery voltage and wheel size. You’ll need both to verify the settings are correct. The battery voltage is usually printed on the battery case (e.g., 48V, 52V), and the wheel size is printed on the tire sidewall (e.g., 20×2.4, 26×2.1).
If your display is blank or the bike won’t power on at all, skip the settings menu entirely and check the battery connection first—a loose connector is the most common cause of a dead display, and no P-setting will fix that.
How to Enter the P-Settings Menu
The P-settings (parameter settings) are the controller’s configuration menu. You don’t need them for daily riding, but they control wheel size, speed limit, PAS sensitivity, and throttle behavior. Here’s the standard entry sequence on most Troxus displays:
1. Turn the bike off using the Power button.
2. Press and hold both Up and Down simultaneously, then press Power to turn the bike on. Keep holding Up and Down for about 3 seconds.
3. The display will show a parameter code (e.g., P01) and a value. Use Up/Down to change the value, and Power/Mode to move to the next parameter.
4. Save and exit by pressing and holding Power for 3 seconds, or simply turn the bike off and back on.
If the menu doesn’t appear, try holding only the Up button while powering on. Some Troxus controllers use a different entry sequence, and the manual for your specific model is the final authority.
If you see a parameter code you don’t recognize, stop and write it down. Don’t change values you don’t understand—a wrong setting here can make the bike unrideable until you correct it.
Key P-Settings and What They Actually Do
Not all P-settings are equally useful. The following are the ones most Troxus owners actually adjust, with the typical code numbers used on common displays. Note that your model may use different numbers—write down your factory values before changing anything.
- P01 (Backlight brightness): Adjusts screen brightness from 1 (dim) to 5 (brightest). A higher setting improves daylight visibility but draws slightly more power from the main battery.
- P02 (Miles vs. Kilometers): Set to 0 for kilometers, 1 for miles. If your speedometer reads absurdly high or low, check this first—it’s the easiest fix in the menu.
- P03 (Voltage class): Sets the battery voltage (24V, 36V, 48V, 60V). Do not change this unless you’ve swapped the battery or controller. Setting it wrong can cause the battery gauge to read full when empty, or trigger a low-voltage cutoff that strands you mid-ride.
- P05 (Wheel size): Tells the controller your wheel diameter in inches (e.g., 16, 20, 26). If this is wrong, your speedometer and odometer will be off by a fixed percentage. A 20-inch wheel set to 26 will read about 30% too fast—you’ll think you’re cruising at 28 mph when you’re actually doing 21.
- P08 (Speed limit): Sets the motor cutoff speed in km/h. On a Class 2 e-bike (throttle-assisted up to 20 mph), this is typically set to 32 km/h. Lowering it reduces top speed but can extend range slightly because the motor stops drawing peak current earlier.
- P09 (Throttle mode): Some controllers let you choose between throttle-only, PAS-only, or both. If your throttle does nothing, this setting may be disabled.
- P12 (PAS sensitivity): Controls how quickly the motor responds to pedal input. A lower value gives a more immediate response (good for stop-and-go city riding); a higher value smooths the engagement (better for gravel or loose surfaces where sudden torque can break traction).
- P14 (Current limit): Sets the maximum current the controller draws from the battery. Raising it increases acceleration and hill-climbing torque but also increases heat in the motor and controller, and drains the battery faster. Lowering it is a legitimate way to extend range if you’re riding flat terrain and don’t need punchy acceleration.
Model-Specific Notes
- Troxus Explorer / Step-Thru models: These typically use a 48V system with a 500W rear hub motor. The default speed limit is usually set to 32 km/h (20 mph) for Class 2 compliance. If you ride off-road on private land, you can raise P08, but be aware that the motor’s efficiency drops sharply above its rated RPM, and heat builds up on long climbs.
- Troxus folding models: Wheel size is often 20 inches. Double-check P05 after any controller replacement—a mismatch here is the most common cause of “my speedometer says 28 mph but I’m barely pedaling” complaints.
- Troxus cargo models: If you carry heavy loads (over 250 lbs total), consider lowering P14 slightly. The motor will feel less punchy, but the controller and battery will run cooler, which protects the wiring and connectors over time.
Display Units: Switching Between Miles, Kilometers, and Voltage
The display can show speed in miles or kilometers, and the battery gauge can be shown as bars or as a live voltage readout. Voltage is the more honest measurement: bars are a rough estimate, while voltage tells you the actual state of charge.
- To switch units: Use P02 (as described above). Set 0 for km/h, 1 for mph.
- To view live voltage: On most Troxus displays, repeatedly press the Power/Mode button to cycle through trip distance, odometer, and then a number like 48.2V or 52.4V. This is the battery’s current voltage under load.
Here’s the practical rule for a 48V battery: A fully charged 48V battery rests at about 54.6V. At 48V, you’re around 50% capacity. At 44V, the battery is nearly empty, and the controller will cut motor power to protect the cells. If you see the voltage drop suddenly under acceleration (e.g., from 52V to 47V), your battery has high internal resistance—either it’s cold, aging, or the connections are loose.
PAS Levels: Matching Assist to Terrain and Payload
Troxus bikes typically offer 5 PAS levels, with 0 being no assist (pure pedal power). Each level maps to a percentage of the controller’s current limit, but the exact curve varies by firmware. The general behavior is:
- PAS 1: ~15–20% of max current. Good for flat, empty streets where you want a light tailwind feel. Expect a modest range boost.
- PAS 2: ~30–35%. The sweet spot for most commuters on flat ground. The motor carries some weight without making the bike feel twitchy.
- PAS 3: ~50–55%. Handles gentle hills and headwinds. Range drops noticeably compared to PAS 2.
- PAS 4: ~70–75%. For sustained climbs or heavy cargo. The motor draws significant current, and the battery voltage will sag visibly on the display.
- PAS 5: 100% max current. Full power. Use for steep hills or when you’re starting from a dead stop with a loaded rear rack. Expect the shortest range and the most heat in the motor.
The mechanism at play is current draw, not just speed. At PAS 5, the controller allows maximum amperage, which produces maximum torque. That torque is what gets you up a hill, but it’s also what drains a 48V 13Ah battery in under 20 miles if you hold it wide open. If you value range, stay in PAS 1–2 on flats and only step up when the grade demands it.
Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Respond
When the display shows a code like E01 or E07, the controller is telling you where the electrical system is failing. Here are the most common codes on Troxus systems:
- E01 / E02 (Throttle or brake fault): The throttle isn’t returning to zero, or a brake lever sensor is stuck. Check the throttle connector and the brake lever’s small wire. If the brake lever is stuck, the motor won’t engage at all—this is a safety feature.
- E03 (Motor phase fault): The controller isn’t seeing all three motor phase wires. Check the large connector where the motor cable meets the frame. A bent pin or corroded contact is common after wet rides.
- E04 (Throttle voltage out of range): The throttle is sending a signal above the expected 0.8–4.2V range. This usually means a damaged throttle or a short in the cable.
- E05 (Brake lever fault): The brake sensor is always engaged. The motor won’t run. Check the brake lever’s internal switch and the connector.
- E06 (Low battery): The battery voltage dropped below the controller’s cutoff threshold. Charge the battery. If this appears with a full charge, the battery’s BMS may be unbalanced or a cell group may be failing.
- E07 (Motor hall sensor fault): The hall sensors inside the motor aren’t communicating properly. This often happens after the motor takes a hard impact or water ingress. It’s a shop repair unless you’re comfortable opening the motor hub.
A practical note: If you get an error code after riding in heavy rain, the first step is to disconnect the battery, unplug the display and controller connectors, dry them with a cloth, and reconnect. Water in the connectors is the single most common cause of intermittent error codes, and it’s a five-minute fix.
When to stop and get help: If you’ve dried the connectors, reconnected everything, and the same error code returns immediately, stop troubleshooting. Repeated E03 or E07 codes after a clean, dry reconnection point to a damaged motor cable, a failing controller, or a motor that needs internal repair. Continuing to ride with a phase fault can overheat the controller and damage the battery. Take the bike to a shop or contact Troxus support at that point—the repair cost is lower than the cost of a fried controller and a replacement battery.
Fine-Tuning for Range vs. Power
The controller settings give you a direct trade-off between range and power, and the right balance depends on your ride profile.
- If you commute under 15 miles round trip on flat roads: Keep PAS at 1–2, leave P14 at factory default, and set P08 to the legal limit. You’ll have plenty of range and the motor will run cool.
- If you carry cargo or ride hills: Raise PAS as needed, but consider lowering P14 by 10–15% if you notice the controller getting hot to the touch after long climbs. You’ll lose some acceleration but protect the electronics.
- If you’re chasing maximum range: Drop P14 to its minimum, ride in PAS 1, and keep your speed under 15 mph. The motor draws far less current at lower speeds because aerodynamic drag scales with the square of speed. You can often double your effective range this way, at the cost of a slower commute.
The battery’s voltage sag under load is your best feedback tool. If the display shows a 5V or more drop when you accelerate hard, the system is working too hard for the battery’s condition—either reduce the current limit or plan for a battery replacement sooner rather than later.
A Quick Note on Replacement Displays
If your display fails, you don’t necessarily need a dealer-only part. Once installed, you’ll need to re-enter your wheel size, voltage class, and speed limit in the P-settings, because the replacement display comes with factory defaults that won’t match your Troxus setup.
When to Leave the Settings Alone
Not every issue is a settings issue. If the bike cuts out mid-ride, the problem is more likely a loose battery connection, a tripped circuit breaker on the battery case, or a worn-out controller than a P-setting. If the motor runs rough or makes grinding noises, that’s mechanical, not electronic. And if you’re unsure about a setting, the safest move is to write down the factory values before you change anything—most displays let you scroll through the P-menu without saving, so you can read the defaults and revert if needed.
