Ecotric Controller & Display Settings: A User’s Guide

If you ride an Ecotric e-bike and the display feels like a mystery box, you’re not alone. The controller and display work together to govern everything from pedal assist strength to top speed, and knowing how to adjust them changes how the bike performs. This guide walks through the P-settings, display units, PAS levels, and error codes you’ll actually encounter, with model-specific notes where they matter.

What You Need Before Touching Any Settings

Before you enter the settings menu, gather a few things so the process goes smoothly and you can undo mistakes:

  • A pen and paper or a phone note app. Write down every P-parameter value before you change it. This is the single most useful habit for e-bike tuning. If a change makes the bike ride worse, you can revert in under a minute.
  • The battery charged to at least 50%. Some Ecotric controllers behave erratically when the battery is low, and a voltage drop mid-settings-change can corrupt a saved value.
  • Your bike’s model name and approximate year. Ecotric has used at least three different display protocols across its lineup. Knowing which one you have tells you which menu structure to expect.

Stop signal: If the display goes blank or shows scrambled characters when you enter settings, stop immediately and power the bike off. That’s a sign of a communication issue between the display and controller, not a settings problem. Continuing to poke at buttons won’t fix it.

How to Enter the P-Settings Menu

The P-settings (parameter settings) control the bike’s core behavior. This is where you adjust speed limits, wheel size, throttle response, and other controller-level parameters.

To enter the settings menu:

1. Turn the bike on with the battery connected.

2. Hold the Mode/Set button for 5–10 seconds until the display switches to a “P” number.

3. Use Up and Down to scroll through the P-parameters.

4. Press Mode/Set to select a parameter, then use Up/Down to change its value.

5. Hold Mode/Set to save and exit.

Some Ecotric models require a specific sequence: press and hold Up and Down together for 3 seconds, then press Power to enter settings. If the hold-Mode method doesn’t work, try that combination.

Important: Changes to P-settings affect the controller directly. Write down your original values before changing anything so you can revert if needed.

Key P-Parameters and What They Do

The exact P-number mapping varies slightly between Ecotric controllers, but these are the parameters you’ll most commonly encounter:

P01: Backlight Brightness

Adjusts display brightness. Values typically range from 1 (dim) to 3 (bright). Set it to 1 to conserve battery on long rides—the display draws a small but continuous current.

P02: Speed Limit (Maximum Speed)

This is the one most riders want. It sets the controller’s maximum motor speed, usually in km/h. On many Ecotric models, the default is 25 km/h (~15.5 mph), which complies with European-style regulations. Raising this to 32–40 km/h (20–25 mph) unlocks more top speed on models with the motor capacity to support it.

Trade-off: Higher speed limits drain the battery faster and increase wear on brakes and tires. If your Ecotric is a Class 2 model (throttle + pedal assist, max 20 mph), pushing past that limit may also change its legal classification. Know your local e-bike class laws before you adjust.

P03: Controller Voltage Setting

Sets the system voltage to match your battery (24V, 36V, 48V, or 60V). Most Ecotric models are 36V or 48V. Do not change this unless you’ve swapped your battery for a different voltage. An incorrect setting can damage the controller or motor.

P05: Wheel Size

Sets the wheel diameter in inches. This affects speed and distance calculations. If you’ve changed your tires to a different size, adjust this to keep the speedometer accurate. A 26-inch wheel set to 24 inches will read faster than you’re actually going, which can make you think you’re speeding when you’re not.

P09: Throttle Mode

Controls how the throttle responds. On some controllers, setting this to 1 enables throttle-only mode (no pedaling required). Setting it to 0 may require pedaling before the throttle engages. If your throttle feels dead, check this parameter first.

P11: Pedal Assist Sensitivity

Adjusts how quickly the motor responds when you start pedaling. A lower value gives a more immediate response; a higher value smooths it out. If the bike lurches forward when you start pedaling, increase this value. If it feels laggy, decrease it.

P12: Pedal Assist Strength

Sets the overall power output of the pedal assist system. Lower values give a gentler push; higher values deliver more torque. This is separate from the PAS level you select while riding—it’s the ceiling for all levels.

P14: Current Limit

Controls the maximum current the controller draws from the battery. Higher current equals more torque and acceleration but drains the battery faster and generates more heat in the motor. If your motor overheats on steep climbs, lowering this value can help.

Adjusting Pedal Assist Levels (PAS)

Ecotric bikes typically offer 5 pedal assist levels, selectable with the Up/Down buttons while riding. Level 0 is no assist (pure pedal power). Level 5 delivers maximum motor output.

The PAS system works via a cadence sensor—it detects when the pedals are turning and applies motor power accordingly. It does not measure how hard you’re pedaling. That means the motor will deliver the same power at level 5 whether you’re cruising gently or hammering up a hill.

Practical approach to PAS levels:

  • Level 1–2: Use for flat terrain, low-speed cruising, or when you want to extend battery range. The motor provides a light push that takes the edge off but still requires real pedaling effort.
  • Level 3–4: Good for moderate hills, headwinds, or when you want a comfortable commuting pace without working up a sweat.
  • Level 5: Reserve for steep climbs, heavy loads, or when you need maximum acceleration. Battery drain at this level is roughly 2–3 times higher than at level 1 on the same route.

Range math: A 48V 13Ah battery (624 Wh) at PAS level 1–2 on flat ground might deliver 30–40 miles. The same battery at PAS level 5 on hilly terrain could drop to 15–20 miles. The display’s battery gauge is a voltage estimate, not a precise state-of-charge reading—it will drop faster under heavy load even if the actual charge is fine.

Display Units: Switching Between MPH and KM/H

If your Ecotric display reads in kilometers per hour and you want miles (or vice versa), the setting lives in the P-menu. Look for a parameter labeled P04 or P06 (depending on your controller version) that controls unit display.

To switch units:

1. Enter the P-settings menu.

2. Find the parameter that shows a “km/h” or “mph” value.

3. Change it to the desired unit.

4. Save and exit.

Some Ecotric displays also have a separate “U” parameter for units that sits outside the main P-sequence. If you don’t see a unit option in P-settings, scroll through the U-parameters instead.

Note: Changing the display unit does not change the speed limit value. If P02 is set to 25, that’s 25 in whatever unit the display shows. If you switch from km/h to mph, the speed limit value stays at 25—which now means 25 mph instead of 25 km/h. Check and adjust P02 after switching units.

Error Codes and What They Mean

Ecotric displays show error codes when the system detects a fault. The code appears as “E” followed by a number. Here are the most common ones:

E01: Motor Phase Error

The controller isn’t detecting a proper connection to the motor. Check the motor cable where it plugs into the controller. Look for bent pins, corrosion, or a loose connection. If the cable looks fine, the issue may be internal to the motor or controller.

E02: Throttle Error

The throttle is stuck, disconnected, or sending an out-of-range signal. Check the throttle connection at the handlebar and where it enters the controller. If the throttle was recently replaced, verify it’s compatible with your controller’s protocol.

E03: Motor Hall Sensor Error

The hall sensors inside the motor aren’t communicating correctly. This usually requires motor service. You can sometimes clear the error by powering the bike off and on, but if it returns, the motor needs attention.

E04: Brake Lever Error

One of the brake levers is stuck or the brake cutoff switch is malfunctioning. The motor won’t engage when the brake signal is active—that’s a safety feature. Check that both brake levers return fully to their resting position and that the cutoff wires aren’t pinched.

E05: Controller Error

The controller isn’t responding. This can be a wiring issue, a blown fuse, or a failed controller. Check the main power connections first, then the controller’s internal fuse if accessible.

E06: Battery Under-Voltage

The battery voltage has dropped below the controller’s minimum threshold. This is normal at the end of a charge cycle—charge the battery. If it appears with a full battery, the voltage sensor or battery management system may have an issue.

E07: Over-Voltage

The battery is delivering more voltage than the controller expects. This can happen after a battery upgrade. Verify your battery voltage matches the controller’s rated voltage (P03).

Model-Specific Notes

Ecotric produces several lines, and the controller settings vary slightly between them.

Ecotric Fat Tire models (Hammer, Dolphin): These use a 48V system and typically have the full P-menu described above. The speed limit parameter (P02) is often set to 25 km/h from the factory. Raising it to 32–35 km/h is common and safe for the motor, but expect range to drop by 10–15%.

Ecotric Folder (folding models): Some folding Ecotrics use a smaller display with fewer P-parameters. You may not have access to throttle mode settings or current limit adjustments. The core settings—speed limit, wheel size, units—are still available.

Ecotric 26″ and 27.5″ mountain-style models: These typically use the standard LCD display with full P-menu access. If your display shows a “6” in the corner, that’s the PAS level indicator, not an error.

Older Ecotric models (pre-2020): These may use a different display protocol with U-parameters instead of P-parameters. The functions are similar, but the numbering differs. If you see “U1,” “U2,” etc., you’re on the older system.

3. Test the specific function you adjusted. Changed throttle mode? Twist the throttle from a standstill and confirm the motor engages as expected. Changed PAS sensitivity? Start pedaling and note how quickly the motor kicks in.

4. Watch for error codes. If a new error appears after a settings change, the value you entered may be out of range for your controller. Revert to your original value and try a smaller adjustment.

Normal behavior looks like this: The bike powers on cleanly, the display shows the correct units and speed, the motor responds predictably to throttle and pedal input, and no error codes appear within the first few minutes of riding.

If something’s wrong: Go back into the P-menu, restore the original values you wrote down, and test again. If the problem persists with factory values, the issue isn’t your settings—it’s a hardware or wiring problem.

Resetting to Factory Defaults

If you’ve changed settings and the bike behaves strangely—or you just want a clean slate—most Ecotric controllers support a factory reset.

To reset:

1. Enter the P-settings menu.

2. Find the parameter labeled “P00” or “RST” (reset).

3. Set it to 1 or confirm the reset prompt.

4. Save and exit.

The display will power-cycle, and all P-parameters return to their factory values. If your controller doesn’t have a reset parameter, you’ll need to manually change each P-value back to its default. That’s why writing down your original values before making changes is worth the 30 seconds it takes.

When to Leave Settings Alone

Not every adjustment is an upgrade. The factory settings are tuned for a balance of range, motor longevity, and legal compliance. If you’re happy with how your bike rides, there’s no need to change anything.

If you do adjust, change one parameter at a time and test before moving to the next. That way, if something feels wrong, you know exactly which setting caused it. The controller and display are the brain of your Ecotric.
